Capital Repair Funding for Community Housing

Capital repair funding is available to support community housing providers in maintaining safe, sustainable, and affordable housing. These programs provide financial assistance for essential and strategic repairs that preserve existing housing supply and extend the useful life of buildings.

Applications are assessed based on program-specific requirements and available funding. Housing providers are encouraged to review program guidelines carefully and ensure all required documentation is submitted. Approved projects are subject to funding agreements with timelines for project initiation and completion.

Canada-Ontario Community Housing Initiative (COCHI)

The Canada-Ontario Community Housing Initiative (COCHI) was introduced by the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing (MMAH) in 2019 as part of the Community Housing Renewal Strategy. COCHI leverages federal investments under the bilateral agreement between MMAH and Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) and is intended to help preserve the supply of non-profit community housing. COCHI funding supports community housing providers to complete urgent capital repairs that preserve and extend the functional lifespan of their building.

It outlines program eligibility and affordability requirements, eligible capital repair projects, funding details and timelines, required supporting documentation, and how applications will be evaluated.

Durham Community Housing Repair Program (DCHRP)

The Durham Community Housing Repair Program (DCHRP) was introduced in 2026 by the Region of Durham as a direct result of discussions held during National Housing Day in late 2024. This program provides funding to support community housing providers in completing essential capital repairs that help maintain the long-term sustainability and viability of community housing in the Region of Durham. The program offers funding in the form of a forgivable loan for non-cosmetic repairs that address health and safety, regulatory requirements, and the overall condition of housing assets. DCHRP funding supports projects that preserve and extend the useful life of community housing buildings while ensuring they remain safe, functional, and affordable for residents.
